5 Morning Yoga Poses to Start Your Day with Energy
The first 30 minutes of your day set the tone for everything that follows. When you begin with intentional movement and breath, you prime your nervous system for focus, calm, and resilience.
Here are five poses I recommend to my students for a powerful morning start:
1. Cat-Cow (Marjaryasana-Bitilasana)
Begin on all fours. Inhale, arch your spine and lift your gaze (Cow). Exhale, round your spine and tuck your chin (Cat). Repeat for 8-10 breaths. This gentle flow wakes up the entire spine and releases overnight stiffness.
2. Downward-Facing Dog (Adho Mukha Svanasana)
From all fours, tuck your toes and lift your hips high. Press your chest towards your thighs and pedal your feet. Hold for 5 breaths. This full-body stretch energises while calming the mind.
3. Low Lunge (Anjaneyasana)
Step one foot forward between your hands. Lower your back knee and sweep your arms overhead. Hold for 5 breaths each side. This opens the hip flexors that tighten overnight.
4. Standing Forward Fold (Uttanasana)
Stand with feet hip-width apart and fold forward, letting your head hang heavy. Bend your knees as much as you need. Hold for 5-8 breaths. Blood flow to the brain sharpens morning focus.
5. Mountain Pose (Tadasana) with Intention
Stand tall, feet grounded, arms by your sides. Close your eyes. Take 3 deep breaths and set one intention for your day. This simple act of presence bridges your practice into daily life.
