Yoga for Back Pain Relief: A Gentle Approach

Ritu1 August 20265 min read

Back pain is one of the most common complaints I hear from new students, and it is almost always connected to modern lifestyle habits: prolonged sitting, poor posture, weak core muscles, and accumulated stress held in the body.

Yoga addresses back pain from multiple angles — it stretches tight muscles, strengthens weak ones, improves posture awareness, and calms the nervous system that amplifies pain perception.

Poses for Lower Back Relief

Child's Pose (Balasana)

Kneel, sit back on your heels, fold forward with arms extended. Rest your forehead on the mat. This gently decompresses the lower spine. Hold for 1-2 minutes.

Supine Twist (Supta Matsyendrasana)

Lie on your back, draw one knee to your chest, then guide it across your body to the opposite side. Keep both shoulders grounded. This releases tension in the spinal muscles. Hold 8-10 breaths each side.

Bridge Pose (Setu Bandhasana)

Lie on your back with knees bent, feet flat. Press through your feet to lift your hips. This strengthens the glutes and lower back muscles that support your spine. Hold for 5 breaths, repeat 3 times.

The Most Important Rule

Never push through sharp pain. Yoga should create a sensation of stretch and release, never sharp or shooting pain. If a pose does not feel right, skip it or ask your teacher for a modification.

In my live classes, I always offer back-friendly modifications. If back pain is your main concern, the Flexibility & Mobility sessions on Thursdays are designed with you in mind.
